「我在路上撿到一個皮夾」為什麼不能直譯成標題裡的
“I picked up a wallet on the street.” 呢？
這又是因為很多人在學英文單字/片語時沒有真正理解它的意思
會以為反正「撿」就是 pick up
事實上，pick up 這個片語指的是把東西撿拾起來的動作
(它還有很多其他意思，像是「接某人」、「領取」、「買…」等)
假如是在路邊或計程車等地方無意中「撿到」別人的東西
在英文要用 find 這個動詞才對
所以應該要說 I found a wallet on the street / on the sidewalk / on the side of the street.
(另外注意在英文裡要指一般廣義的「馬路」，通常是用 street 而不是 road )
假如是在計程車上撿到別人的皮夾
則是：I found a wallet in the taxi the other day. (我前幾天在計程車上撿到皮夾。)
( the other day 指的是幾天前不明確的某一天)
把撿到的東西交給警方或某主管單位，則是用 turn in 這個片語
要講清楚是交給誰則再加 to + 對象
例如：

(小男孩把他在遊樂場撿到的錢交給一名老師。)
