“The price is too expensive.” 這個句子譯成中文好像沒什麼問題
不過那是因為在中文裡，我們的確可以說一個東西很貴
也可以說一個東西的「價格」很貴
但在英文裡，只能說某個事物「便宜」或「貴」
也就是說當你要用形容詞 cheap (廉價的) / inexpensive (不貴的) / expensive (昂貴的) 時
只能用事物當主詞
比如：
所以往往該用 inexpensive 而不是 cheap )
當主詞是 price 時，正確的形容詞應該是 high (高) / low (低)
因此「價格太貴」要說 The price is too high. 才對
另一個說法是 The price is too steep.
雖然有些老外在口語上的確會說 The price is cheap / expensive. 這樣的句子
但這畢竟不是正確的講法，一般稍微受過教育的老外也會知道這其實是不對的
另外像這樣常被誤用的字還有 rent (租金)、speed (速度) 等
中文也會說「租金很便宜/貴」或「速度很快/慢」
但 rent / speed 搭配的形容詞一 樣該是 high / low
所以應該說 The rent is too high. 而不是 The rent is too expensive.
The car was running at a high speed. 而不是 The car was running at a fast speed.
