「清明節」的英文說法叫 Tomb Sweeping Day
字面上的意思就是「掃墓節」
( tomb [tum] 是墳墓，sweep [swip] 是動詞「掃」)
但若要說到清明節所做的事，大部份的人其實都不是真的去「掃墳墓」sweep tombs
而是去先人墓地進行整理、向他們致敬問候、擺放祭品、焚燒紙錢等
「整理墓地」可以說 clean up / tidy up the gravesite
「上墳」可以說 pay one’s respects at 某人的 gravesite
「焚燒紙錢」是 burn joss paper / burn ghost money
「燒香」是 burn incense
「祭品」則是 food offerings
「磕頭」一詞已和港式飲茶的dim-sum一樣變成廣東話進入英文的外來語
它就叫 kowtow [ˋkaʊˋtaʊ]
