有很多人以為 prepare 這個字後面一定要接 for
因為學校裡都叫大家這樣背
事實上, prepare 也可以單獨使用, 和 prepare for 意思不一樣
只是在中文裡, 都會叫 ”準備”
prepare something 所指的 ”準備”, 是提供這樣東西
比如: We are preparing a retirement party for John.
The teacher prepared a quiz for her students.
My mother prepared a big meal for my birthday.
加了一個 for 以後, prepare for something 當然就是 ”為了...” 做準備的意思
所以並不是直接提供這樣東西, 而是因為這樣東西而需要做準備
比如: My brother is preparing for the big test tomorrow.
Have you prepared for Chinese New Year?
所以, 講 He is preparing a speech. 是指他正在著手發表演說
”演說” 就是此人要拿出來的東西
但講 He is preparing for a speech. 則是指他正在為演講這件事做該有的準備
比如練習發聲技巧, 手勢, 準備需要的投影片或道具等
意思是不一樣的
以後大家要想清楚現在指的是哪種情況, 才不會用錯
(註: prepare 現在在口語中也可簡化為 prep [prɛp]
比如: I didn’t prep for the exam.)
