wish 和 hope 在中文裡也都叫”希望”
許多人也常混淆這兩個字的使用
wish 所指的希望, 大多只是”奢望”
是不太可能成真的事, 或和事實相反的事
所以常接假設語氣
例: I wish I were as rich as Bill Gates. (我真希望能像比爾蓋茲一樣有錢)
(和現在事實相反, 用過去簡單式, be 動詞則不分人稱, 一律用 were)
Sally wishes she didn’t have to go to work today. (莎莉真希望今天不用去上班)
wish 的另一個意思是”祝(別人)...”
像聖誕節時, 很多卡片上就會寫: We wish you a merry Christmas.
別人生日時就可以說: I wish you a happy birthday.
祝人成功: I wish you success.
祝人好運: I wish you good luck. / I wish you the best of luck.
而 hope 這個字指的是希望某事會發生, 期待會有某種結果
後面句子可能用各種不同的時態
例: I hope it won’t rain today. (我希望今天別下雨)
She hopes her boss will give her a raise. (她希望老板能幫她加薪)
