很多在中文裡是一樣講法的東西, 在英文裡都分得很細, 而且要用不一樣的字
這點常常是中文使用者在學習英文時的困擾
就連去查字典 (英漢字典) 也看不出兩個英文字有什麼不同
今天要談的兩個字是 wink 和 blink
它們在英漢字典裡都叫 ”眨眼”
但其實兩個字是不一樣的 ”眨眼”
(你看英文分得有多細......連這麼一個簡單的動作還要用不一樣的字! )
wink 指的 ”眨眼” 是只眨一個眼睛
這種眨眼通常是要傳達某種訊息
比如想表現俏皮, 挑逗, 或向某人使眼色示意
這個字可以當動詞, 也可以當名詞
比如: That blond woman at the bar just winked at me.
(在吧台 的金髮女子剛才對我眨眼)
Tim winked at me to warn me about Lisa.
( Tim 向我使了個眼色, 要我小心 Lisa )
I think that cute guy at the bar just winked at you.
(吧台那個帥哥剛剛對你眨眼哦! )
當名詞的用法: The woman gave Ben a seductive wink.
(那名女子對 Ben 挑逗地眨了眨眼)
a wink 也可以用來指非常少的時間
比如: I didn’t sleep a wink last night. (我一夜沒闔眼/沒睡)
blink 則是指人體反射動作的眨眼, 也就是兩個眼睛的眨眼
(分這麼細聽起來有點扯, 但是是真的! )
它也兼具動詞和名詞的詞性
比如: He didn’t even blink when he shot the woman in cold blood.
(他冷血地射殺那名女子時連眼睛都沒眨一下) (註: 中文裡的 ”殺人不眨眼” )
You blinked in the photo. (你在拍這張照片時閉眼睛了)
有趣的是, 雖然 blink 當動詞是指兩個眼睛一起眨
它當名詞時卻有個片語叫 in the blink of an eye
意思是 ”一瞬間; 一眨眼的工夫”
比如: It all happened in the blink of an eye.
(事情發生在一瞬間)
It seemed that she made dinner and cleaned up the kitchen in the blink of an eye.
(好像才一眨眼的工夫, 她就做好晚餐並清理好廚房)
