年齡在英文中的表示法看似很簡單, 大家卻常用錯而不自知
比方說, 大家都知道怎麼講一個人幾歲
像 She is 35 (years old). 這種很簡單
但若要用 age 這個字, 或要講 ”在...歲時...”, 問題就來了
中文裡的 ”她的年齡是 35 歲” 這個句子若要大家翻成英文的話
很多人就會直接翻成: Her age is 35 years old.
但這就像 My job is a teacher. 這種句子一樣, 是直譯而又錯誤的中式英文
英文是邏輯性很強的語言, 不像中文有很多含糊籠統的空間
為什麼不能說 “My age is 35 years old.” ? 因為它不合邏輯
真正 35 years old (35歲) 的是人, 而不是 age 這個東西本身
所以只能說 Her age is 35.
但不能說 Her age is 35 years old.
同樣的, 雖然中文裡會說 ”我的職業是老師”
但在英文裡不可以說 My job is a teacher.
也是因為 job 是個東西, 它不可能是 ”老師” 這種 ”人”
所以只能說 I am a teacher. 而不能說 My job is a teacher.
還有, 問對方幾歲是 How old are you?
但若用 age 這個字來問, 就要說 What is your age?
而不能像中文裡的 ”你年紀多大?” 直譯成 How old is your age?
道理和前面是一樣的
age 就像電話號碼或地址, 我們要問的是它的數字或內容是 ”什麼”
所以疑問詞要用 what
再來, 講到某人在幾歲時做什麼事, 通常用 when he/she was… 的子句來表示
比如 He started working when he was 8 (years old).
但班上有同學常會用自創的 He started working at 8. 這種東西
忘了 “at + 數字” 是指 ”在...點”, 像 I get up at 8. 是指在八點起床
事實上, 用 at 來指年齡的講法, 必須搭配 age 這個字
而它的講法有兩種: at the age of ___ = at age ___ 有 the 就要有 of, 不然就兩個都沒有, 大家要記好了, 不要亂組合 (其實很多片語都是這樣)
比如: He left home at the age of 13. = He left home at age 13.
= He left home when he was 13 (years old).
