”酒測” 的基本說法是 sobriety test
sobriety [səˋbraɪətɪ] 這個字是 sober 的名詞
sober [ˋsobɚ] 是指沒喝醉, 清醒的, 是形容詞
也是 drunk 的相反詞
如果講一個人 He has been sober for three months. 就是說此人三個月沒喝酒了
(並不是有喝但沒醉)
路邊隨機抽檢的酒測叫 a random sobriety test
random 就是指 ”隨機的”
台北現在常有的路邊酒駕臨檢點, 叫 (roadside) sobriety checkpoint
我們可以造個句:
I see a sobriety checkpoint up ahead. That’s why traffic is slow.
被警察叫到路邊停車受檢, 叫 (be) pulled over
像: We were pulled over for a random sobriety test.
也可以用主動語態: The police pulled him over for a sobriety test.

在台灣一般是用儀器測出呼吸中的酒精濃度
這種方式叫 breath test (breath [brɛθ])
而那個儀器叫 breathalyzer [ˋbrɛθə͵laɪzɚ] (也可拚作 ~lyser)
要講一個人沒通過酒測, 就跟考試一樣, 是說 fail the breath test / fail the sobriety test
比如: He failed the breath test and got a huge fine for drunk driving.
(他沒通過呼吸酒測, 必須因酒駕而付鉅額罰款)
從呼吸測出的 ”酒測值” 簡稱叫 BAC (blood alcohol content)
後面也可以再加 level 這個字
或是用 BAL (blood alcohol level) 取代
例如: In the U.S., it is illegal to drive with a BAC (level) that is 0.08% or higher.
(數字 0.08% 要唸 point “oh” eight percent, 在講數字的唸法那篇裡也有教哦)
在美國有 很多種所謂的 field sobriety tests (現場實地酒測, 不靠機器)
就是大家在電視上看到的, 叫人走直線, 反覆用手指碰鼻子, 單腳站立, 或數英文字母等
為避免酒駕被抓而事先找的 ”指定駕駛” 叫 designated driver
( designated [ˋdɛzɪg͵netɪd] )
至於台灣流行的口號 ”喝酒不開車, 開車不喝酒”
在英文裡就只要說 Don’t drink and drive. 或 Don’t drive drunk. 就好了
( drive drunk 這種文法結構很特殊, 是在動詞後面用形容詞
意思是 ”(人) 在 drunk 的情況下開車”, 酒醉是指人而不是開車這件事, 因此不是用副詞)
