形容一個人 ”潑別人冷水”, 在英文裡有很多種說法
之前教過大家愛潑別人冷水的人叫 downer

所以像某位網友說的, 用 throw a wet blanket on someone 來指潑別人冷水
事實上也不是那麼常用
”潑人冷水” 這樣的行為, 可以用的說法有:
(1) ruin someone’s moment / ruin it for someone
ruin [ˋrʊən] 是 ”破壞, 毀掉” 的意思
這裡的 moment 或 it, 指的就是人家開心的時刻
比如: I was feeling really good about my new job, but Nancy had to say something like that
and ruined it for me / ruined my moment.
(2) kill someone’s buzz
buzz 指的是興緻, 一股興奮的情緒或突然湧入的一股活力
掃興的事就是叫 a buzz kill
像是: Watching a beautiful woman barf is such a buzz kill.
或是: Every time I feel good about myself, my sister has to say something sarcastic to
kill my buzz. (sarcastic [sɑrˋkæstɪk] 諷刺的)
(3) rain on someone’s parade
parade [pəˋred] 是指慶祝遊行
原本開開心心地要慶祝遊行, 卻下起大雨, 當然是很掃興的事
所以當一個人 rain on 別人的 parade
意思也是指破壞了別人的好計畫或好心情
例如: We were going to take a road trip until Dan started talking about all these accidents
and rained on our parade.
(我們本來要開車旅行, 結果丹開始講那些意外事故, 破壞了我們的興緻)
不過, 以上講的片語都是指破壞了別人的好心情
但中文裡的 ”潑冷水”, 有的時候是指去打壓別人想做某件事的念頭
那種情況就要用動詞 discourage [dɪsˋkɝɪdʒ] (使...氣餒)
或 disparage [dɪˋspærɪdʒ] (貶低, 輕視)
比如: My mother discouraged me from starting my own business.
He disparaged my idea of opening my own restaurant.

例如: Lisa seems to enjoy making disparaging comments about other people’s achievements.
