什麼叫 (a) hole-in-the-wall?
字面上的意思是 ”牆上的洞”, 不過這裡要講的當然不是這個意思囉~
a hole-in-the-wall / hole-in-the-walls 在現代口語中是指小而不起眼的地方
說它小到, 不起眼到就像 ”牆上的一個洞”
現在多半是指餐廳
比如: Jack took me to a hole-in-the-wall for dinner.
The street is filled with hole-in-the-walls offering all kinds of food.
hole-in-the-wall 還可以當形容詞用
比如: Jade Garden is a great hole-in-the-wall dim-sum restaurant.
(玉園是一家小又不起眼, 但東西很棒的港式飲茶餐廳)
We went to this hole-in-the-wall place for lunch, but I was pleasantly surprised.
(我們去了一個又小又不起眼的地方吃午飯, 結果卻是意外的驚喜.)
不過要注意的是, 在英國, a hole-in-the-wall 也可能是指自動提款機
各位可能在電影裡或出國時看過, 國外的提款機很多真的是裝在 ”牆上的一個洞” 裡
很特別的是, 如果是指提款機時, 複數就會是 holes-in-the-wall
把表示複數的 s 加在前面的 hole 那裡
在指小餐廳時, 複數會用 hole-in-the-walls, 把 s 加在最後面的 wall 那裡
很 ”機車” 吧? )
